Food manufacturer Heinz has been unable to determine how a tin of beans became mouldy.
According to The Spectator, Ed Divers, a keen consumer of baked beans, opened a can last month to discover a large grey-white lump of mould. He called Heinz, and the company sent a courier to pick up the can, which was taken for inspection.
Testing failed to establish the cause of the mould, and the can itself was found to be in perfect condition. Since mould needs air to grow, and cannot survive the sterilisation process, Heinz is at a loss to explain how the mould got into the can.
Divers and his wife were sent C$25 (US$16.4) in coupons, as well as a baseball cap and two recipe books. Divers confirmed he has returned to eating beans after taking a short break.
