Brian Hayward, CEO of Agricore United, will be formally recognised at the banquet as the recipient of the Lifetime category Market Mover Award. The distinguishing characteristic of all the 2002 Award candidates is that they have all proven that they can successfully grow firms in challenging, exceedingly competitive niches of the North American food, health and wellness sector. The selection of all the candidates has also been based on an assessment of their capacity to balance return on investment with the development of people and communities.

When Susan Niczowski started Summer Fresh Salads Inc. in 1991, backed by a C$100,000.00 family she focused all of her attention on the creation of prepared salads for the local Greater Toronto Area market. Since then, Summer Fresh Salads Inc. has grown in leaps and bounds, doubling the size of its premises and servicing not only the GTA but also national and international markets. Given its recent quarter sales increase of 20% and increased penetration into US markets, expected sales for year-end 2002 are C$30m. Susan has also grown her roots within her community. In 2001, Yonge Street Mission was the beneficiary of a Christmas meal sponsored by the company. Summer Fresh Salads Inc. is also a strong supporter of the Canadian Safe School Network.

A native of Montreal, Brian Hayward joined United Grain Growers in 1981 to start working his way through a progression of operating and corporate positions. In 1987, Hayward took on the challenge of leading UGG’s Grain Marketing Division, which involved overseeing both domestic and international trading activities as well as the company’s Transportation Department. In 1991, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of UGG. When the company merged with Agricore in 2001 to form Agricore United, Mr. Hayward became chief executive officer of Western Canada’s largest agribusiness. He is responsible for managing the complete business operations of the company. He has been involved in a number of industry and community organisations and served on the boards of directors of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange, which included a term as board chairman. Mr. Hayward is a member of the Arthritis Society’s Joints in Motion marathon team and is presently a member of the board of the Arthritis Society of Manitoba. He has a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics from McGill University.
