The introduction of the logo is a part of the regulations on organic foods, which were announced in December 2006.

“Canada’s new government is delivering certified choice for consumers,” said Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, who is also the Minister responsible for the CFIA, at the official launch of the new logo. “This logo means consumers will know that products that bear it have met strict criteria and are certified organic.”

Canadian standards for organic production include the use of natural fertilizers and raising animals in natural conditions. Certified products must also contain at least 95% organic ingredients.

Following the phase-in period, which ends in December 2008, it will also be mandatory that all organic products be certified for inter-provincial and international trade.
