Five farms have now reported cases of the disease, with the latest cases at two farms in Fraser Valley, east of Vancouver, British Columbia.

In a bid to stop the spread of the disease the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said around 275,000 birds would be culled in the infected area, reported Dow Jones News. Around 90,000 birds in western Canada have already died or been culled as a result of the virus outbreaks.

Since the first outbreak was announced several countries, including the European Union and several Asian nations, have banned imports of Canadian poultry.
