The Canadian arm of the US retailer Safeway is expanding its 11 July recall to include all ground meat products made on 24 April, because these products may contain Escherichia Coli 0157:H7 bacteria and should not be consumed.

Included in the voluntary expanded recall are the following Safeway brand products:


– One-pound chub of extra lean ground beef with Best Before date of 8 May
– One-pound chub of lean ground beef with Best Before date of 8 May
– One-pound chub of ground pork with Best Before date 8 May
– Five-pound chub of lean ground beef with Best Before date 8 May
– Five-pound chub of regular ground beef with the Best Before date of 8 May
– Tray pack regular ground beef with the Packed On date of 24 April- 6 May


This recall impacts Safeway store in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and British Columbia, and the company stressed that it does bot apply to any of the ground meat product currently available in Safeway stores.


Although the product was sold in May and is most likely consumed by now, Safeway is expanding the recall out on an abundance of caution. The company is asking its customers to check their freezers and return any of these products to any Safeway store for a full refund.

There have been no cases of reported illness related to this  product. E. Coli 0157:H7 may cause life-threatening illness by producing a toxin that breaks down the lining of the intestines and damages the kidneys. Food contaminated with E. coli bacteria will not look or smell spoiled, but these products should not be consumed.


Consumers are reminded that all ground beef product is safe if properly handled and cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 71°C or 160°F.
