Canada-based natural and organic food group SunOpta has booked “record” earnings in the third quarter of the year.

In the three months ended 29 September, net profit soared 72% to C$5.8m (US$5.86m). The group said the earnings are “a third-quarter record” for SunOpta, after excluding certain non-recurring items in prior years.

Third quarter earnings include the impact of around C$0.9m in pre-tax severance, acquisition and start-up costs.

Operating income in the period increased 72% to C$12.7m, while sales climbed 8.7% to C$279.3m.

Revenues were driven by “strong growth” across integrated grains-based food product categories and higher sales within Opta Minerals Inc. as a result of recent acquisitions.
