Biox Corp.’s technique uses low-grade food oils to make non-toxic, sulphur-free biodiesel and was developed by University of Toronto Professor David Boocock. Its machinery can be installed near such places as rendering plants and palm oil manufacturers.
The fuel can be produced for about 6-8 Canadian cents (US$0.04-0.06) a litre, less than a third of what it costs to make other current forms of biodiesel, claims Boocock. A pilot plant has been built in Oakville, Ontario, Canada and Biox expects to begin building unmanned manufacturing plants this summer.
