The US is already challenging the Canadian Wheat Board system at the World Trade Organisation, claiming it breaks global commerce rules, mirroring its successful action against Canada’s collective dairy market organisations.
Now it is imposing duties as high as 8.15% on C$400m (US$287.2m) worth of wheat exports into the US. The Canadian government has vowed to fight the duty, at the WTO if necessary, in the latest of a string of trade disputes between the North American neighbours.
