Wal-Mart Stores has announced plans to open 40 Supercentres in Canada in the company’s next fiscal year.

The US retail giant announced today (26 January) that it plans invest more than C$500m (US$501.9m) in building new stores, as well as expanding, remodelling and relocating existing outlets. The expansion will see the business entering Manitoba and Quebec.

The retailer plans to open a net of 10 new stores, while upgrading some 30 discount stores to its Supercentre format, which will offer a broader range of food and include fresh produce, a Wal-Mart spokesperson told just-food.

David Cheesewright, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Canada, said: “Wal-Mart Supercentres offer Canadians the widest assortment of products under one roof in the marketplace. Our customers consistently tell us that they are looking for convenience and everyday low prices. Wal-Mart Canada delivers both.”
