Ryding-Regency Meat Packers, a Canadian meat processor also known as Tri-Pet Holdings, has had its operating licence suspended amid a food safety investigation related to e-coli.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Ryding-Regency Meat Packers, based in Toronto, Ontario, had its ‘Safe Food for Canadians’ licence suspended on 17 September and cannot therefore conduct any business activity for which the licence was issued for the time being.

The CFIA said the licence was suspended because Ryding-Regency Meat Packers “failed to implement effective control measures in accordance with Part 4 of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations”.

During September, CFIA has issued two recall notices pertaining to Ryding-Regency Meat Packers related to e-coli. One on 24 September covered Quebec for beef cheek meat, according to its website. The other, issued on 25 September for New Brunswick in Ontario, involves both beef and veal cheek meat and veal trimmings.

CFIA said the licence suspension will be lifted if it determines that “corrective measures have been taken”. However, if such actions have not been taken within 90 days after the suspension, the Agency can cancel the license.

Anthony Petronaci, the chief executive of Ryding-Regency Meat Packers, was not in the office to comment when contacted by just-food today (30 September).
