Corpesca, Chile’s leading producer of fish oil and powder, recorded a 23.8% decline in earnings from January through August 2000, relative to the same period in 1999. The reduction in earning is directly linked to the fact that sales to Japan declined from US$77.9m in 1999 to US$45.1m during the first 9 months of 2000. Japan continues to be the main export market for these products. Corpesca holds a 20% share of Chile’s oil and powder sales. The second place company, Compañia Pesquera Camanchaca, registered a 9.2% decline in sales during the first 8 months of this year, relative to a year earlier.
