7-Eleven Japan Co. is to open 200 convenience stores in Tianjin, China’s sixth-largest and most rapidly developing city.

Recently designated its own “special economic zone” cities like Tianjin will be vital to the growth of 7-11 Japan as its domestic market shrinks in the coming decades.

7-Eleven Japan already runs 83 stores in Beijing under the supervision of its Japanese parent and will open two locations in downtown Tianjin today (17 September). Its network in the city is to be expanded to 50 by the end of next year.

China currently also has 1,500 7-Eleven stores run under license by US unit 7-Eleven Inc.
