Carrefour of France is the top foreign retailer in China, measured by sales during the first half of the year, according to a Chinese Ministry of Commerce survey quoted by the Dow Jones news agency.

The world’s second-largest retailer had sales in China worth 10.2bn yuan (US$1.3bn) in the first half, the ministry said.
Carrefour was fifth overall in the list of China’s retailers. The Chinese unite of Wal-Mart was 19th. Wal- Mart China had sales of 4.7bn yuan during the period.
The top retailer was Shanghai Bailian (Group) with sales of 36.5bn in the first half, up 13.7% from a year ago, the ministry said. China’s 30 biggest retail chains had total sales of 236.5bn yuan during the first half, up 30% from a year ago.
Hong Kong-listed Gome Electrical Appliances Holding, Shenzhen- listed Suning Appliance Chain Store Group and Shanghai-listed Dashang Group follow Bailian on the list.

Competition in China’s retail sector has been intensifying since the end of 2004, when China fully opened the sector under its commitment to the World Trade Organization.
Local papers reported last month Carrefour was planning to invest 200m yuan to purchase China’s Nextmart, while Wal-Mart plans to nearly double its outlets to 90 in China by the end of 2006.
