The bird flu that has ravaged the business of traders in Hong Kong was caused by infected imports of frozen chicken from the Chinese mainland, according to Wong Yung-kan, a legislator who represents the agriculture and fisheries sector.

Calling on Chinese authorities to step up inspections of exports, Wong maintained that it is an “open secret” that mainland farmers slaughter chickens for export that would not pass quarantine examinations if alive.

From the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department however, officials were adamant that frozen chicken meat was adequately tested for various diseases at the Chinese border.
