Use of the tainted Chinese wheat caused a major pet food recall in the US following the deaths of a number of domestic animals and raised fears that the human food chain could become contaminated in a similar fashion.

The Chinese State Council has said it will prioritise the inspection of fertilisers, pesticides, animal medication and additives in livestock.

The decision comes alongside news that a date has been set for the trail of former State Food and Drug Administration boss Zheng Xiaoyu. According to a report by China Business News, the former official, accused of accepting bribes to knowingly approve unsafe practices in the food and drug industries, will stand trail in mid-May.
