A statement on the Chinese Agriculture Ministry website said that more than 1,800 birds were found dead on 22 December at a farm in Dazhu County, in the Sichuan province. The samples were tested at a laboratory yesterday (3 January) and confirmed the birds died from the H5N1 bird flu virus.

More than 12,900 birds have since been culled to halt the spread of the virus, according to the statement, with two ministry officials dispatched to the site to investigate.
