UK retail giant Tesco is set to open its first convenience store in China.

The company, which has so far focused on running hypermarkets in the booming economy, will “shortly” open its first Express store in Shanghai, a spokesperson told just-food.

“Express has been a successful format in seven of our markets but this will be a new format for China,” the spokesperson said. “We like to take a flexible approach.”

The spokesperson could not confirm when the outlet will open.

Tesco, which has also announced plans to expand its business in Turkey, has seen its overseas sales grow faster than at home in recent months.
