Soup and sauces manufacturer Continental Foods has completed an expansion of its factory in Puurs, Belgium, which sees it add capacity.

Continental Foods was the former European consumer food business of Campbell Soup Co. taken over by private-equity firm CVC partners in 2013.

With the new lines, production volume is 40% higher. The factory produces brands such as Devos Lemmens, Royco Minute Soup and Imperial for the retail and foodservice sectors.

Davide Bustreo, CFO of Continental Foods, told just-food the added production was for export to the Nordic markets. He declined to comment on reports that the investment into the expansion totaled EUR4m (US$4.5m).

The factory in Puurs was set up a year ago and saw the company close its facility in Sweden. Bustreo said the decision to move production to Belgium was because "asset utilisation in Sweden was far below what was sustainable".
