A new prosciutto factory has been opened by the Braca Pivac Group in Croatia which will double production capacity of dry-cured hams.

The 10,500 square-metre plant is located in the Ravca Economic zone near the town of Vrgorac in Split-Dalmatia County and has been built with an investment of HRK120m (US$17.6m). The facility can produce 300,000 pieces of prosciutto and 2,500 tons of pancetta, pechenitsa and the Croatian speciality of budola, according to a statement.

Ivica Pivac, the company’s president, said: “In addition to increasing production capacity, the new prosciutto [facility] will enable the Pivac Group to better position itself on the market, and in the long run [is] a more significant step towards the European market.” 

Pivac also has facilities in the cities of Karlovac and Cakovec, situated in central and northern Croatia, respectively. It also now has a plant in the capital of Zagreb after increasing its stake in local confectioner Kras in January.

The new plant employs almost 4,500 people.
