Ledo’s Coco Majestic ice creams have arrived on the shelves of Portuguese supermarket chain Pingo Doce as the Croatian company seeks to increase its international presence.

The company said its consignment of exports to Portugal is one of a number of projects in the pipeline in cooperation with the Jeronimo Martins retail group, the owner of Pingo Doce.

“Competition in the European ice cream market is exceptionally harsh, but Ledo has managed to impose quality and innovation,” Ledo director of exports Tomislav Cavlek said, adding the company plans to target Poland, another major market for Jeronimo Martins.

Ledo exports a third of its production to about 20 countries and works in conjunction with private-label retailer Daymon Worldwide. The company also counts UK supermarket chain Tesco as one of its customers.

The Croatian firm, which also supplies other frozen foods such as vegetables, fish and ready meals, has two distribution centres in Zagreb and Dugopolje.

Ledo is part of the indebted Croatian food manufacturing and retail group Agrokor, which has been placed in state ownership as part of moves to try to stabilise the business.
