Cuban scientists have published five papers in the summer 2001 issue of the Journal of Medicinal Food (Volume 4,2) which detail findings that certain sugar cane extracts can lower LDL cholesterol.
A class of phytochemicals derived from sugar cane wax and other plant sources have also been shown by a series of animal and human clinical trials to have other anti-inflammatory, antiviral and neuroprotective properties.
The phytochemicals consist of long-chain aliphatic alcohols and their metabolites.
Journal Editor Sheldon S. Hendler PhD MD, told BW HealthWire: “The safety profile of these substances appears excellent. [They have] some rather remarkable therapeutic as well as preventive potential.”
