Czech bakery group United Bakeries has denied local reports that it is for sale, insisting that it is instead seeking a strategic partner to build on its market leading position in Central Europe.
“We are merely looking for a strategic partner that would strengthen our position as the biggest bakery manufacturer in Central Europe,” spokesman Jaroslav Pomp told just-food.
The country’s public radio Cesky Rozhlas last week reported that the Czech company’s two owners, brothers Marko and Jaroslav Parík, think its sale could fetch some CZK3bn (US$16.1m).
Cesky rozhlas also mentioned as potential buyers Anker of Austria, Barilla of Italy and local bakery Penam, part of the Agrofert group.
United Bakeries is a subsidiary of European United Bakeries, based in Luxembourg.
