France-based co-operative Groupe d’Aucy has acquired fresh fruit and vegetables supplier La Fraîcherie for an undisclosed sum.
Located in Brittany, the firm occupies space in supermarket chains such as Auchan and Casino and sells preservative-free, ready-to-use produce. The company generates a turnover of EUR8.2m (US$9.2m) and employs 136 staff.
Alain Perrin, the Groupe d’Aucy chief executive, said: “The fresh-cut segment represents potential growth in the future for our group. Purchasing La Fraîcherie marks the beginning of a new adventure as much by the nature of the products as the innovative aspect of the concept.”
In February, La Fraîcherie was placed under administration by a commercial court in Lyon. Company founder Acil Jabou put its difficulties down to its “intense, rapid development which demanded considerable financial resources and put pressure on its cashflow.”
He told French media last month that La Fraîcherie was in discussions with “a large food co-operative” to control the entire supply chain from the production of the fruit and vegetables to the retail ‘corners’ in supermarket outlets.
