The shortage has meant sky-high prices for pig farmers after years of over-production of organic pork, according to an article in daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende. Normally, organic pork costs 11.50 DKK (US$1.32) a kilo, but abattoirs are now paying 22 DKK.
“It is because of foot and mouth and the BSE problems in Europe,” said sales manager Arne Dyrebjerg, “we have had a lot of demand from both Italy and Germany since their food ministers have spoken up to support organic food.”
