The Danish Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Mariann Fischer Boel, has launched a nationwide campaign to promote organic food products in Denmark.

A total of DKr5.0m (US$0.79m) will be invested in the campaign, which will be backed by the Danish agriculture council Landbrugsraadet, the Danish Consumers Council and the Danish Organic Food Association.

The campaign follows a rise in organic food sales, as reported by retail chain Coop Danmark. The retailer reported a 2.0% year-on-year rise in sales of organic foods for the first four months of 2003. Sales of organic foods currently account for 30% of food retail sales in Denmark, which is believed to be the highest consumer of organic products on a per capita basis, reported the Danish News Digest.
