Some 700 member-farmers met at Danish Crown’s headquarters last week to complain about producer prices.

Pig farmer Bernhardt Mortensen told farm publication Landbrugsavisen he was ready to tear up his contract to supply 20,000 pigs a year. “Several wholesalers are looking at marketing and now we need to coordinate our efforts,” he said.

Danish Crown chairman Niels Mikkelsen is concerned about losing its suppliers. “Two million is a big number and if that should happen we would have to adjust our capacity and that would mean closing down processing plants,” he said.

Mikkelsen said Danish Crown could not pay higher producer prices because it would lose customers.
