Boel explained that while Denmark’s record on food safety policies was good, the general controls on meat products in the EU need updating.

The new barcode system would show up weak spots in the food chain quickly, and enable contaminated products to be swiftly traced.

The proposal will feature among several new policy suggestions to be debated in the EU over the next six months.
