Denmark’s Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries announced yesterday [Thursday] that it would regulate trans fatty acid levels in foods and reward producers that approach zero levels.

Minister Mariann Fischer Boel has cleared the move with the EU Commission.


Denmark claims a technological lead in reduction of trans fatty acids, and has brought levels under 1% in oils and fats. The new initiative aims to identify levels in other types of food products and bring them near zero as well.


The Ministry will offer an official stamp of approval for marketing goods as “trans fatty acid free” for producers who reduce levels under 1%.


Trans fatty acids, found in cakes, biscuits, chocolates and typical fastfood products, are associated with increased risk of heart disease.
