Netherland-based bakery business Dutch Bakery has acquired Tjendrawasih, a local company manufacturing oriental snacks, from fellow Dutch food group Buitenfood.

Tjendrawasih founded in 1977, specialises in oriental snacks including bapao steamed buns, pita and pies. Dutch Bakery said it would take on Tjendrawasih’s bakery in Alkmaar and all its employees. Financial details were not disclosed.

In a statement, Dutch Bakery CEO Rob Verhoef said: “The acquisition of Tjendrawasih represents an interesting extension of our product portfolio and further broaden our audiences at home and abroad. We see great potential for the products of Tjendrawasih, thanks to the combination of our strong distribution and our excellent relationships with retail. What makes this acquisition additionally interesting are the similarities in production. Thus our worsten and sausage rolls baked on the same machines as for example bapao and often use the same ingredients.”

Buitenfood CEO Bart Bakker said the sale of Tjendrawasih was part of a strategy “to focus more on our core business”. Bakker added: “We are pleased that Tjendrawasih [will] in Dutch Bakery be in a good home where no doubt it gets to continue to grow.”

The sale of Tjendrawasih was not Buitenfood’s only disposal this month. Buitenfood has also sold a clutch of brands and plants that were part of its Royaan subsidiary to Dutch food group Van Geloven, which is majority-owned by McCain Foods.

NPM Capital, the Netherlands-based private-equity firm behind Buitenfood, said the food group had struck the deals to concentrate on expanding its oven snacks business, which includes the Kwekkeboom Oven brand.

“By divesting a large part of its business, Buitenfood can now focus even more on the brand and the oven snacks category,” Rutger Ruigrok, investment director of NPM Capital, said.
