Dutch authorities have introduced another 72-hr ban on transporting poultry, eggs and other related products after a second outbreak of avian influenza.

The Dutch Food and Consumer Authority said the H5 strain had been detected at a chicken farm in Ter Aar, Zuid Holland. It is not yet clear whether it is a low pathogenic or a highly pathogenic variant and further tests are being carried out to determine this.

From today (20 November), authorities have imposed a 72 hour ban on transporting poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used bedding from poultry and from poultry farms and slaughterhouses. 

Last weekend a bird flu outbreak was announced on a poultry farm in Hekendorp, near Utrecht. This led to a three-day suspension of distribution of poultry and eggs. Around 150,000 hens at the farm were culled as a precaution.

Yesterday, Ukraine moved to block imports of poultry products and raw materials from the UK, the Netherlands and Germany in a bid to prevent the spread of bird flu.
