Proposed amendments to existing directives controlling such trades would ensure that the EU would have the power to ban the import of all cloven hoofed species, notably wild animals where controls are currently weaker.

The proposal also refines regulations allowing the EU to block the import of horses from affected countries. Its tabling follows a thorough review of relevant legislation.
