A European Commission communiqué said EU co-financing for national beekeeping subsidies in 2011 would increase from EUR25m per year. The programmes will support hive regeneration, research and production of apiculture products, notably honey and comb, especially in Spain, Romania, France and Greece, who have the largest honey sectors.

The communiqué claimed: “National programmes are currently the only tool available to partially offset the loss of bees”. Populations have devastated by varroa mites.
