A campaign has been launched calling for a comprehensive European Union (EU) law guaranteeing the safe co-existence of genetically modified (GM) and conventional food crops.

Launched in Strasbourg, France, by the Assembly of European Regions and environmental group Friends of the Earth, the campaign calls for the EU to follow Germany’s example by passing a European regulation insisting upon: Biosafety measures such as separation distances between GM and non-GM crops and a public register for GM organisms; a liability scheme for when conventional and organic crops (and seeds) are contaminated by GM material; the legal right of regional governments to ban all GM crops or foodstuffs from their territories.
