EU: Commission authorises BSE aid to cattle farmers in Luxembourg
The European Commission yesterday [Tuesday] authorised Luxembourg to grant national aid totalling around €4.8m (US$4.2m) to cattle farmers who suffered losses because of the BSE crisis. The cash is intended to compensate for losses between December 2000 and November 2001. In normal circumstances Member States are not allowed to introduce schemes of this kind. However, the Commission considers that the exceptional character of the present crisis on the beef and veal market justifies the granting of aid.
