The European Commission today (12 April) formally launched a major review of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) with a call for ideas on making food consumers more aware of the industry’s impact.
Speaking to the European Parliament’s agriculture committee this afternoon, new EU agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos announced two months of public consultation for views from “environmental protection associations, consumers, and animal welfare groups” as well as food producers.

Ciolos stated he valued a strong CAP, saying it was “indispensable for sustainable growth… employment… green growth [and] intelligent growth.”
However, the CAP needed clearer and easily understood payment systems “so taxpayers understand the link between support for agriculture, market supply and remuneration,” he said.
The review will collect ideas on achieving this, as well as on guaranteeing food producer incomes and protecting the industry from market volatility.
Ciolos said a website (http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/cap-debate) would receive public contributions until June. A conference will follow in July. And a formal policy paper will be published by December.
