The European Milk Board (EMB) wants the council to reduce the EU’s current milk quota for the 2009/10 marketing year by 5%, “as an immediate temporary measure is necessary to rebalance the milk market”. It called for quotas generally to be “applied in a more flexible way” to better balance supply and demand to stabilise prices.

This follows Friday’s communiqué from the EU heads of government summit in Brussels, which debated dairy market problems in depth.

The summit called for the European Commission to produce “an in-depth market analysis” with “possible options for stabilising the dairy market” over the next two months.

However, the EU emphasised that it did not want to unravel the ‘health check’ decision to phase out dairy production quotas.
