The European Commission has approved the payment of three national subsidy schemes for the European Union (EU) food sector, using its powers to block or approve state aid schemes to ensure a level EU commercial playing field.

It has allowed the payment of GBP2.25m by the UK government on the Meat Generic Advertising Scheme for Wales, from April 2006 to March 2007. Also, it has allowed Irish potato producers to claim government grants of up to EUR400,000, up from EUR150,000 previously. And it has approved a subsidy scheme helping the changeover of German agricultural and forestry machines to plant oil from petrol and diesel. No financial limit was included on Commission documents for this scheme.
