It stressed that “important information gaps do not allow, at this stage, the quantification of BSE-related risks” regarding goat meat consumption, and has said that “increased monitoring of TSEs (transmissible spongiform encephalopathies) in goats as proposed by the European Commission will be essential”.


It stressed that no link has yet been made between goat meat and variant Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (vCJD), the human form of mad cow disease, but the panel said a “lack of knowledge” regarding its incubation period and on human exposure levels undermined “confidence in this observation”.
