The EU has banned the export of live animals and all fresh milk and meat from most of the UK in the wake of the foot-and-mouth outbreak.

The European Commission ruled late yesterday (6 August) that no cattle, sheep, goats and pigs – or products from these animals – could be shipped from Great Britain.


However, live animals and animal products from Northern Ireland will still be allowed to enter the rest of the EU, subject to certain conditions.


The Commission said it had decided to enact the measures after consulting the UK government.


“The decision adopted by the Commission today, in collaboration with the affected member state, confirms these measures and identifies the whole of Great Britain as a high risk area,” the Commission said in a statement.
