The Centre has predicted a 16% rise in EU cereal production this year, with an anticipated EU-wide harvest of 301m metric tons thanks to favourable weather and an increase in farmed area.

Best prospects are for sugar beet, durum wheat and maize, the EU said.

A European Commission spokeswoman said this level of productivity would be “positive” for food prices in Europe, though much would depend on the level of stocks.

“At least this forecast should not add to worries about food prices,” the official told just-food.
