“Italy’s zero tolerance as far as contamination of wheat with genetically modified organisms is concerned, is not in keeping with the position of the European Commission,” Fischler was quoted by Agence France-Presse as saying.

Fischler emphasised that a directive approved by the Commission in July had
“fixed the tolerability of accidental contamination at 0.9% of production.”

Authorities in the northwest Piedmont area last month, however, ordered farmers to destroy almost 381 hectares of wheat which had less than 1.0% GMO contamination, reported AFP.
