Troubled waters may lie ahead for talks at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) summit in Hong Kong over disagreement around the issue of European Union agricultural subsidies and tariffs.

The EU is under pressure from the US and some of the world’s poorest countries to reach a fair trade agreement that would see farm subsidies reduced.

But according to a report on the BBC, Peter Mandelson, EU Trade Commissioner, warned that a new deal on immediate cuts was “not possible”.

Mandelson told assembled press that this round of talks should focus on agreeing a blueprint for reducing subsidies and tariffs next year.

“There’s simply too little on the table to negotiate about in Hong Kong,” he said in a pre-summit press conference.
