Pan-European research and development network EUREKA has developed a piglet feed that improves the animals’ digestive health when adult, to overcome anticipated difficulties should the European Union ban antibiotics in pig feed.

“There is a proven risk of diminished health, such as more diarrhoea and losses of piglets,” said Dr Annemarie Dirkzwager, of EUREKA member Institute of Animal Nutrition ‘De Schothorst’, of the Netherlands.

Her team tested different feed additives, before proving some organic acids promoted growth and improved gut condition. Their resulting alternative additives and standards for raw materials and nutrients are being used by feed manufacturers and have been adopted by farmers.
