If formally adopted and then accepted by the European Parliament, the legislation will set total allowable catches for black scabbardfish, blue ling, greater silver smelt, ling, orange roughy, red seabream, roundnose, grenadier and tusk, all of which feature on many sea-fish menus.

Under the deal, vessels targeting the fish will need a specific licence and will be limited in capacity. EU fisheries Commissioner Franz Fischler said “with these measures the EU is taking the lead in the effort to regulate deep-sea fisheries in international waters.”
