The European committee for world food standards body Codex Alimentarius has recommended that the existing regional standard for mayonnaise sold in Europe be scrapped and that work underway to revise these guidelines should be stopped.

Meanwhile the committee agreed that the Codex committee on food hygene should consider revising existing guidelines for the preservation of raw milk by use of the lactoperoxydase system and that a new risk assessment into the process should be undertaken.

The committee agreed that this system should only be used when refrigeration was not available and that milk and milk products preserved in this way should not be sold internationally.
