The European Commission proposed today (Friday) an extension of about one year in the ban on the use of meat and bone meal throughout the EU. The recommendation will be discussed at next week’s Council of EU farm ministers who will have the final say. The Commission said that after inspections by the Food and Veterinary Office and a first evaluation of the results of increased BSE-testing, it was considered premature to lift the present ban, due to expire at the end of June. Brussels wants it kept until legislation on animal by products, foreseen in the beginning of 2002, is adopted.
