The Council of Ministers backed a European Commission proposal for a mandatory 2% rise in dairy quotas across the bloc from 1 April.

The decision flew in the face of proposals from the European Parliament, which last week called for an optional 2% increase.

The German and Austrian agriculture ministers voted against the mandatory quota hike, according to minutes from the Council meeting held yesterday (17 March).

France, the second-largest producer of milk in the EU, abstained.
