EU agriculture commissioner Franz Fischler has said that the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is need of reform.

Speaking at an informal meeting of agricultural minister from EU member states, Fischler said the “times when the CAP was geared to maximizing output have long gone.”
He told Ministers: “Agriculture is having to face changes in what society expects of it. Quality assurance, ethical issues surrounding animal welfare, environmental goals… are coming more and more to the fore. We must take into consideration the concerns of the ecologists, the animal rights activists.”
