France has threatened to ban imports of British lambs over six months of age unless the spinal cord has been removed. The ban could be imposed from next Monday, in contravention of EU laws.

Fischler met with farming representatives and centre-right Members of the European Parliament and commented afterwards that it was “impossible” for EU Member States to ignore EU rules. He said he would encourage EU health and consumer protection commissioner David Byrne to take action if France goes ahead with its ban without scientific justification.
