Spokesman for the commissioner, Gregor Kreuzhuber, told Reuters yesterday [Tuesday]: “According to the diagnosis, it was salmonella.”
Fischler, who is responsible for the handling of many of Europe’s major food scares, underwent a series of tests in Austria at the weekend after being admitted to hospital with a fever.
Doctors have given Fischler orders to rest for a week, a decision that will cause him to miss several high-level meetings of EU and international farm and agricultural leaders.
